A historic New Zealand landmark, North Head is rich with military features and laced with tunnels waiting to be explored.

Easy, self guided tramps make for an enlightening activity on any day, with the views of all the canons and tanks dotted around the area to the background of a blue sea. As an extra perk, grass surfing down the hills (a little bit of gravity, friction, and a cardboard box), is wholly encouraged by the council!

The walk to the top of the mountain is great fun and the view from the top is so breathtaking it could be straight from a picture postcard. Dogs are also welcome on the reserve, as long as they're on a leash.

So much fun exploring all the tunnels in this amazing historic site. it's a unique New Zealand experience the whole family enjoyed.

The view. The tunnels. A must!

This is the perfect spot for a family walk. The children love to run through the old navy tunnels and look at the disappearing gun. Awesome view of the gulf.

Some of the best views of Auckland is simply right on top of this spectacular mountain.

The mountain has very scenic views of the Auckland CBD, Rangitoto Island and nearby suburbs that’s simply spectacular and it’s an unique place where learn the history of New Zealand’s coastal defences.

Great outdoor fun for the kids/family to go exploring in the tunnels. Kids love sliding down the hill with their piece of cardboard. Awesome seaview and Rangitoto.

The historical tunnels are exciting to walk through. There’s a wonderful view of the harbour & Auckland City & Devonport village from the top.

The one place that I always wanted to visit in the school holidays when I was a kid was the North Head tunnels. If you have a young one who is obsessed with history and fascinated by war then a trip to this world war military site is a must. Gun forts, tunnels and cannons – need I say more? Brush up on a little NZ history and pack a torch, this is a young explorers dream.
