A historic New Zealand landmark, North Head is rich with military features and laced with tunnels waiting to be explored.
Easy, self guided tramps make for an enlightening activity on any day, with the views of all the canons and tanks dotted around the area to the background of a blue sea. As an extra perk, grass surfing down the hills (a little bit of gravity, friction, and a cardboard box), is wholly encouraged by the council!
The walk to the top of the mountain is great fun and the view from the top is so breathtaking it could be straight from a picture postcard. Dogs are also welcome on the reserve, as long as they're on a leash.

If you have a young one who is obsessed with history and fascinated by war then a trip to this world war military site is a must. Gun forts, tunnels and cannons – need I say more? Brush up on a little NZ history and pack a torch, this is a young explorers dream.
