Nothing is quite as good for beating the heat as a swim, and the swimming spot at the Old Cement Works in Warkworth is far more than your average pool. Bring the kids, bring your friends, bring your dog - there's fun abound to be had whether you're the sort to launch yourself from the banks into the water below or you're more interested in soaking up the sun in the dry.

This converted old cement works had been flooded with fresh water and makes the perfect place for a family day out in summer. Free of charge, and only a 45 minute drive from Auckland City, there's nothing not to love.

Fair warning, the water gets pretty deep pretty quickly, so if you're a less confident swimmer, or you have littlies with you, be sure to bring some inflatable water toys to make the most of the day for all those in your company.

A seriously good way to spend a sweltering day - sun, swimming and no sand to cover all your belongings till next Winter. Exploring the (apparently) haunted ruins alongside the waterhole is another adventure in itself.

Old cement works is definitely one of the best water holes around. An absolute awesome secret gem.

This place has got to be one of the best kept secrets in the area. Not only is it damn picturesque but the fun to be had jumping off the banks and from the trees is well worth the trip out there. Bring a picnic and make a day of it, you'll find yourself craving a revisit on the next super sunny day.
