Just a couple of blocks from the main beach, Pilot Bay is a picturesque harbour beach located on the western side of Mount Maunganui. Surrounded by cafes, motels, hotels and holiday homes, it consists of a narrow stretch of sand with a grassy area behind. A new boardwalk was officially opened in 2013.

Located at the base of Mauao, it is a popular spot for swimming, boating, sunbathing, kayaking, picnicking and BBQs.

Numerous sports events are held here including the Port of Tuaranga Half Marathon, the annual Santa Run and various triathlons.

The sheltered sandy bay with its iconic row of Norfolk Pines is a family-friendly destination for barbecues, water sports and swimming. The views across the harbour to the busy Port of Tauranga and Kamai Ranges are especially beautiful at sunset. Experience a real slice of New Zealand, grab some take-a-way fish and chips wrapped in newsprint and eat them on the beach.

It's great for the kids to swim there and play in the sand. Love sitting on the grass and having a picnic lunch or dinner.

This is my swimming and paddle boarding spot after I've walked the Mount in the summer! The water is clear, cool and crisp. I love that I can relax and cool down without worrying about crashing waves. It's a great spot for families and kids and amazing to have a picnic in the afternoon as the sun is setting.

Great times to be had in one of the more safe swimming spots. Always good to be close to a cheap ice cream and to odd busker

This is one of the most picturesque beaches in the Bay. Despite my early skepticism I think last year’s addition of a boardwalk along the grass verge has only enhanced the look and practicality of the beachfront. It’s a great place to have an evening barbeque and a top spot for taking fish n’ chips on a summer’s evening - especially if there’s a cruise ship heading out to sea. A great beach for a dip, safe for kids and the view is fantastic.
