It is jokingly said that The Backbencher is where real politics take place. This gastro pub boasts a slightly fancier menu, and an extensive wine list, and is home to some of Wellington's best chips. Fun fact: The Backbencher has it's own TV show on Prime.

        Best known as a politics pub, you might not pick chips off the massive, MP-themed menu. However, The Backbencher’s chunky potato chips rate among the best in Wellington - best served with a pint of one of their tap beers.

          Some people say this pub is where politics really happen. With an MP-themed menu and puppets of leading political players, a who’s who of politics and business can regularly be spotted here. Head along on Wednesday nights from about 6pm for the filming of pub politics show Backbenches.

            Have lunch or grab a beverage with a twist! Across the road from the Beehive, there is the Backbencher pub and cafe where you can have a beer or a bite to eat whilst admiring the figurines around the room of famous NZ icons. These amazing, realistic figurines are made by the people of Weta! Hopefully you’ll see a politician come in to join you as well. No surcharge as well, what more could you ask?
