Just went to Galbraiths with the girls for a birthday / Christmas lunch. It had everything - the big pine Christmas tree, dreary weather outside, retro carpet, old wooden tables dotted with old men enjoying a quiet pint, decent prices, uber-tasty bangers and mash...fun. Next time I'm up for a bit of nostalgia I shall make a short sojourn down the road to this absolute gem.
The beers here are absolutely fantastic. I'm personally not a huge fan of cask ale, so I don't drink the locally made drops that often, but they always have totally banging guest beers on tap which I like to get well stuck into. The drinks prices are reasonable too, which is odd for Auckland. The food is mostly good but can be a bit hit and miss. Serving sizes can vary hugely across the menu which is a bit odd (the beef brisket being kind of puny, and the chicken confit being a behemoth). The food is probably a tad overpriced for what you get (but then again I'm a cheaparse). The staff have that "grumpy English bartender" thing going which is a bit weird, but yeah, overall it's probably the best place to drink in Auckland.
A great place for traditionally brewed beer, they have a great selection of quality ales. They have their own microbrewery on site - try the awesome chocolatey stout. Food is decent quality pub fare with large sized portions. Great for a pub lunch, or for a pre-rugby pint (it's not too far to Eden Park).
