All for the kids
- 16Huka Prawn ParkWairakeiCool place to take the kids, heaps for them to do including prawn fishing and a fun park. Or if you’re a big fan of prawns like myself, just the restaurant alone is worth the trip. THE best prawn curry.
- 21AmazemeNgongotahaMazes are too cool. 1.4km of hedge lined pathways to the centre. I probably had more fun than the kids lol.
- 35Splash PlanetHastings CentralTake the whole family, hire one of their BBQ’s and while the kids go crazy on all the rides you can relax in the sun, or join them. Get there early if you want a good spot.

Best Buffet
- 12China PalaceGisborne CentralI used to spend quite a lot of time in Gisborne and became a regular at China Palace, whether it was getting takeaways downstairs or hitting the buffet upstairs. This place is a local icon and safe to say some of the best chinese food in the country and the best part is it’s cheap as chips.
- 211Gengy's HamiltonHamilton CentralI love the whole Gengy's experience, so I had to try the branch in Hamilton one time we were there and I have to say it put all my previous experiences to shame. Maybe it was just the fact that it was where it all started before they grew and spread across the country, but it was all on point.
- 32PoppysNgaruawahiaIf you want a good homely meal this is the spot. It just had that atmosphere of a family feed on a Sunday, almost like you were eating your Mum or Aunty’s cooking, i loved it.
- 41Jk Buffet HouseMount MaunganuiAt first glance you'd assume this was just your average chinese takeaways, but you'd be wrong. The place itself is small yes, but the food is far from it. All your chinese favorites and as much as you can handle. I'm not the biggest dessert fan but I always have some of their cheesecake to finish off - it's the one.
- 51Golden SpringNapier CentralHighly recommended to me from locals and I can see why. Their chicken wings were too good, could have filled my plate with just those alone…ok I did lol.

Do something for nothing
- 116Mount Maunganui Summit TrackMount Maunganui3.8km of steep hill and steps, but the view at the top is more than worth it. A work-out and a cool pic for your instagram lol.
- 222Hamilton GardensHamilton EastSomething for everyone here. Good spot for picnic or just a walk to enjoy the gardens themselves. Also home of Te Parapara - New Zealand’s first traditional Maori garden.
- 31Cape KidnappersNapier CentralGood spot for a day-trip. Home to the world’s largest gannet colony which you can get within feet of. If you’re a golfer, the local course is ranked in the Top 50 in the world.
- 41Waikato River TrailsPutaruruGreat for cycling. The entire trail is around 100km so unless you’re feeling invincible and have all day, there’s plenty of parking at various points so you can choose where you start and finish.
- 54Hot Water BeachWhitiangaNamed because of the underground hot springs which filter up through the sand. Dig yourself a hole in the sand and form your own thermal pool to relax in. Make sure you take a spade or you can hire one from the surf shop.

Eat out, minus the guilt
- 16They say the more authentic the Thai food is the more healthier it is also because it's western world who adds all the naughty stuff. Well you can't get any more authentic than this place who even had the ambassador for Thailand give an unsolicited stamp of approval for the authenticity of their food and they received the prestigious 'Thai Select Award' from the Royal Thai Government. Pretty impressive, as is the food.
- 21Kisso Sushi CafeCambridgeJapanese is known for being the healthiest option when it comes to asian food. This place is the best sushi in the Waikato hands down. I’d recommend the fresh salmon sushi, I couldn’t get over how big the pieces of salmon were. I’ve been here a couple of times and the salmon is always perfect.
- 31On The Beach Restaurant and BarGisborne CentralProbably has the best location in Gisborne, the views from the outside tables are pretty amazing. I know that everywhere has a Chicken Salad these days but this salad was the business, too good. Quite expensive but well worth it.
