- 54Bikram's Hot YogaTe AroIt might seem like torture or interrogation on the first attempt, but Hot Yoga is an incredible, if somewhat stressful form of exercise. You'll see the results. You'll feel better. But please, just make sure you drink a lot of water if you're going to go down this marvelous road.

When you're on a health buzz
- 110Les Mills ExtremeTe AroMy gym of choice - the classes are excellent, especially if you suck at self-motivated exercise. Challenge yourself at Pump, Combat or Grit, give one of the many gym rooms a whirl (there’s a women’s gym, plus a cardio cinema and several others over three levels), or try your hands at boxing in an Impact class!
- 22Wellington’s biggest and best supplement shop, selling a massive range of proteins, pills and powders to get you buff. Their prices rival any on the internet!
- 34Health 2000 Lambton QuayTe AroI’m a huge believer in vitamins - people ask if I’m sick because I have so many different bottles on my desk. But there’s nothing better than smashing some Vit C + Echinacea when you’re sick, or a multivitamin for everyday health. Health 2000 has every kinda vitamin under the sun to help keep you well.
- 42You’d be crazy to miss out on Rebel Sport’s regular sales on top-brand sportsgear and accessories. I buy pretty much all my gym (read: gym bunny) gear here - they’ve got the best prices in town.
- 52Hot Yoga of New ZealandTe AroIf you’ve thought about giving yoga, or hot yoga, a go, this is the best spot in town. Your first class is just $8 - try the Wednesday night sampler to see what style you like best.

How to be healthy
- 110Les Mills ExtremeTe AroIt’s only four months ‘til summer, and if you want to put those to good use, get yourself a membership at Les Mills. Sometimes gyms can skew too relaxed (in which case, you slack off) or too intimidating (in which case, you don’t go) but I find Les Mills hits the perfect balance between motivating and welcoming. Their full class timetable means there are bound to be group fitness options for you, regardless of when you start or finish work, or the multiple levels of gyms mean you can choose to go it alone if you’d like. The staff are friendly and helpful and provide plenty of options and support if you feel a bit rusty or unconfident among such hot sporty people – before you know it, you’ll be one of them yourself.
- 24Health 2000 Lambton QuayTe AroOccasionally – usually after a weekend of carbohydrates – I get the urge to go on what I ambiguously term ‘a health kick’, which I start with a trip to Health 2000. If it’s supplementary to your diet and beneficial to your health, you’ll find it here – and they often have great deals if you prefer to buy in bulk, too.
- 35Tank Juice Bar Lambton SquareWellington CentralIt can be hard to eat healthy when you’re pressed for time – or short of money – but Tank Juice Bar has you covered, with juices and smoothies both dairy-based and dairy-free. They’re usually happy to swap out ingredients if you want to personalise your beverage, or you can go with one of their tried-and-true recipes – try adding a vitamin or supplement shot for an extra $1 if you’re feeling under the weather or just low on energy.
- 412Freyberg Pool & Fitness CentreOriental BaySometimes you want a break from your regular gym – and it’s too cold to go it alone outside. In such a situation I head to Freyberg Pool & Fitness Centre – the perfect place to work out during the colder months, in part because it has a spa pool. Of course if you’re serious about getting a workout you could always go for a swim or a jog on the treadmills overlooking the Wellington waterfront.
- 59East Day Spa - WellingtonPipiteaBeing healthy isn’t just about working out and watching what you eat – you can have your body in tip-top condition but you won’t be at your physical peak if you’re stressed and running ragged from workday to workday. If you’re finding it hard to make time for yourself and your mental health, book in for a stress relief massage or facial at East Day Spa, a little slice of serenity tucked off Thorndon Quay.

- 249Maranui Surf Lifesaving Club CafeLyall BayMy favourite café in Wellington and a killer spot for brunch. There's always a line leading down the stairs because it's so popular on the weekends, but a table is never more than a ten-fifteen wait. Super efficient staff and delicious brunches. Coffee is quick and the food takes a little longer because it's so popular. But just enjoy the views over Lyall Bay out the panorama windows - and on a windy day watch the kite-surfers get pummelled!
- 312Freyberg Pool & Fitness CentreOriental BaySo Freyberg has a spa, a sauna and a steamroom for $4.80ea but there are deals if you want a swim too, check out the prices board above the counter as you go in. Excellent spa facilities, always clean and they play some chill out pop music so you can relax to some sounds when you're having a soak! My favourite hotpools in town.
- 45The Enormous Crocodile CompanyWellington CentralA tried and true Wellington treat - hire a crocodile bike and explore the waterfront and Oriental Parade, but be sure not to run over too many unsuspecting pedestrians or crash into other cyclists - this is where the bell comes in handy! Can be rented as 2-seaters or 4-seaters and there's even space on the front for a baby or two to be strapped in tight. Highly recommended - lots of fun.
- 54Rebel Sport - WellingtonRongotaiAll your sporting needs in one big, fat sporting store! They've got everything. I've bought trainers for myself and my partner, from aisles and aisles of the latest styles with expert advice from friendly staff if you ask for it, they're keen to help you out. I've also got assorted sports equipment including balls, bats, netball gear, togs, caps, Adidas gear and Canterbury Clothing Company gear for a German friend who was after something uniquely Kiwi as a gift. A great, well-stocked store. Get your sport on!

- 12Wellington Circus TrustNewtownEver wanted to join a circus? Learn a party trick? Touch your toes? This is the place to learn it all. They take students of all shapes, sizes and abilities in a safe and encouraging environment. I’m currently trying to master the art of hand balance but there are HEAPS of other course such as hula hoop and trapeze too. Half the fun of going to class is watching the others leap, bound and balance around you. I don’t think enough people know about this Wellington gem so go and see how cool it is for yourself! It’s good for you too!
- 21Wellington High School & Com Ed CentreMount CookSo many classes, not enough time! The Community Education Centre have a range of classes to suit. From languages to fitness, cooking, crafts and business courses, the classes are offered throughout the year. The great part is that for a lot of the more popular classes, there are options for days and times. Some courses go for a term, others a month, there are even Saturday courses. Go with a friend or brave it alone, the teachers are friendly and so are the other students. It’s never too late to learn something new!
- 33Cityfitness Group LimitedPoriruaUnlike other gyms, Cityfitness is affordable and their group fitness classes are run by friendly and approachable instructors. They’re located in lots of handy locations so it’s hard to make excuses not to go.
- 44Hangdog Climbing AdventuresAlicetownHangdog is awesome because you don’t need to commit to weekly classes or have your own fancy gear. You can hire everything you need and just go when you want to. Their experts are great and you feel completely safe (if not exhausted) scaling their walls. If you get hooked, which I’m sure wouldn’t take a lot, you can get 10 trip cards and membership pricing too.
- 51Action Indoor Sports Stadiums Hutt ParkGracefieldNetball, cricket, soccer, the choice is yours. Indoors sports is a great way to keep fit and a great way to socialise. This place is pretty new so it’s nice and tidy and even has a games centre to keep the kiddies (and young at heart) occupied.

Summer Shape Up
- 12Hot Yoga of New ZealandTe AroI'm such a sucker for trying new yoga classes, especially when there is a first timers deal available, hot yoga is no exception to this, with the first class only costing $8. There are two locations, one on Wakefield street, and one on Featherston street, both offering a selection of classes. I highly recommend the power Vinyasa, it'll make you feel like you rule the world!
- 22Polhill ReserveWellington CentralThere is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. The bush walks in Polhill reserve are all amazing, whether you go for 20 mins, or a whole day. Its a neat way to see the different little niches and communities within Wellington. You can walk right up to the Zealandia ridge fence, and definitely see some native birds.
- 38Probably the fanciest (reasonably priced) gym in Wellington. Complete with saunas, steam rooms and a GHD bar, Exodus is a temple of sweat and hard labor. Classes are included in the membership, and a huge variety are available, all of which have spectacularly knowledgeable trainers.
- 41Studio L'amour Dance AcademyWellington CentralFor those with a taste for something more exotic, Studio L'amour is Wellington's home of Burlesque and Pole Dancing. With incredibly experienced, and understanding instructors, these classes are a fantastic introduction into a world where you perhaps wouldn't ordinarily be inclined to enter! Whether it's fitness, or a confidence boost you're after, these classes are amazing!
- 51Virginia Keast ZumbaWellington CentralVirginia Keast Zumba is the place to go in Wellington to get your groove on! With four different locations to choose from in the Wellington area, you really have no excuse! Choose from either a traditional Zumba dance class, or branch out and try Zumba Toning, which incorporates sticks for rhythm and strength!

Where to burn off those nasty holiday food babies
- 110Les Mills ExtremeTe AroHands down the best gym in Wellington. Their staff are super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They can get you back on the fitness bandwagon with the huge selection of classes and quality equipment.
- 216Mount VictoriaWellington CentralMt Vic is the go to spot for burning off all those Christmas cakes before or after work. Jump on your mountain bike for a variety of trails (of which there are various skill levels) or huff and puff your way to the best views in Wellington at the lookout.
- 315Wellington WaterfrontWellington CentralWith the sea on one side and the CBD on the other, and no traffic in sight, you can run for several KMs without having to worry about crossing crazy busy streets. Strap on rollerblades or just go for a leisurely run to battle the bulge.
- 412Freyberg Pool & Fitness CentreOriental BayTraining for a triathlon? Freyberg pool is the place to do it. Overlooking the harbour it is a beautiful spot. Pity it gets so crowded and the "fast" lane is some what slow… 33m pool in length and $5.90 per session. Recommend buying a 12 trip ticket. Also small gym upstairs.
