You can hire everything you need and just go when you want to. Their experts are great and you feel completely safe (if not exhausted) scaling their walls. If you get hooked, which I’m sure wouldn’t take a lot, you can get 10 trip cards and membership pricing too.

- 31Wellington High School & Com Ed CentreMount CookSo many classes, not enough time! The Community Education Centre have a range of classes to suit. From languages to fitness, cooking, crafts and business courses, the classes are offered throughout the year. The great part is that for a lot of the more popular classes, there are options for days and times. Some courses go for a term, others a month, there are even Saturday courses. Go with a friend or brave it alone, the teachers are friendly and so are the other students. It’s never too late to learn something new!
- 42Wellington Circus TrustNewtownEver wanted to join a circus? Learn a party trick? Touch your toes? This is the place to learn it all. They take students of all shapes, sizes and abilities in a safe and encouraging environment. I’m currently trying to master the art of hand balance but there are HEAPS of other course such as hula hoop and trapeze too. Half the fun of going to class is watching the others leap, bound and balance around you. I don’t think enough people know about this Wellington gem so go and see how cool it is for yourself! It’s good for you too!

Best comfort food
- 19Mrs Higgins CookiesWellington CentralNo one can make cookies like Ma Higgins can. It’s a strong-willed person – or one without a sense of smell - who can walk past their Lambton Quay shop without at least slowing down, but when it’s comfort food you’re after, their three-cookie deal is hard to beat. My personal favourite is the raspberry and white chocolate cookie, but if you’d rather, there are cupcakes
- 245Sweet Mother's KitchenTe AroSweet Mother’s Kitchen is a go-to for Wellingtonians on the hunt for southern, Cajun cooking, like chicken gumbo, po-boys and quesadillas. The food is consistently excellent, and reasonably priced for the generous portions – and you can’t go past its wide selection of sweet pies, including pumpkin, apple, pecan and Key lime, for dessert.
- 315Pizza PomodoroTe AroPizza Pomodoro is an institution in Wellington, and as such, it tastes like home. It’s my go-to on Wednesday nights when margaritas are $10, and you can’t get a better pizza for better value in the city. But you can’t go wrong with Pizza Pomodoro on any night of the week, it’s that delicious.
- 410Pandoro Panetteria Woodward StreetWellington CentralWhen I’m in the mood for comfort food I can’t go past an almond croissant and a flat white, and Pandoro Panetteria does one of the best in Wellington. Be sure to try their other selection of baked goods – savoury and sweet – as well.
- 58Kaffee Eis Oriental BayOriental BayWhen the weather’s good, there’s nothing like a walk along Oriental Parade – sometimes, it seems all of Wellington has the same idea. Set your sights on a scoop or two (or three) of Kaffee Eis’ award-winning ice cream for the perfect Sunday afternoon date.

Definitely the fix if you’re after warm chocolate goodness and around the Cuba Street area.

What to do on a lazy Sunday
- 122The Embassy TheatreWellington CentralThere is nothing more relaxing than going to sleep to the faint pitter-patter of rain falling on the roof. Rainy days however, are not as comforting. On a day when it's grim outside I like nothing more than immersing myself in the newest Hollywood creation. The Embassy Cinema seems to make movie watching that much more spectacular. With it's elegant marble staircase, large selection of drinks and snacks, and large comfy seats it doesn't get much better. A day at the Embassy includes curling up eating M&Ms mixed with freshly popped popcorn, while enjoying someone else's fairy tale life. A day at the Embassy, is a day well spent.
- 23Hell Pizza Cuba StTe AroOut of all the pizza chains in New Zealand, Hells is by far the most superior. Or perhaps a Friday night where you decide to treat yourself to a few glasses of well deserved gin and tonic. Glengarry stores have a great range in whatever tickles those tastebuds fancy.

Te Aro: The Highlights
- 14Shalimar Mini MarketAro ValleyShalimar, the dairy that barely sleeps, is the top and tail of every Wellington experience. What other dairys have karaoke? Bizarre and enthralling - its odd that so often a trip down the road for some milk can be so invigorating.
- 26The Aro Street Video ShopAro ValleyIf a bomb was coming and I could only save one shop, I’d save this one. An living icon. A beautiful little universe of film with impeccable taste. An amazing place.
- 311Garage ProjectAro ValleyThe Garage Project has quickly grown at the forefront of the continually expanding craft beer community to seem omnipresent through out the city and soon, surely, the country, but it still remains rather quintessentially only the kind of thing that could be based in Aro. Selling their delightful, nefarious beery brews out of what used to be petrol station, the Garage Project is a great Aro gem.
- 49ArobakeAro ValleyI’m enough of a nostalgist to remember when Arobake was on the other side of Aro Street and much scrappier, less refined - the product was still good though. The rebranding and classy-ing up that took place over several years has only served to bring the stores image in line with its spectacular product.
