A permanent fixture on the ‘best restaurant’ lists since 1986, Prego still stands tall as one of the best dining choices in Ponsonby. An emphasis on simple Italian food with the best-quality ingredients means Prego’s menu features some firm favourites, with many seasonal variations to surprise and delight even the pickiest ‘foodie’.
Alfresco and indoor dining, fabulous award-winning food and friendly and attentive staff – running a great restaurant is an art, yet Prego makes the whole experience seem effortless. And for that we say ‘grazie’.

Always great staff. Delicious food that is spiced up with specials if you dare venture past the tired and true. Calamari, rosemary potatoes and vegetarian linguine are all a must. Sit outside as it’s way too noisy inside unless you are tempted by the gorgeous open fire. Avoid 530-630pm if you don’t have kids, they treat them well so it’s popular.
This is where the ad peeps love to hang. 9 times out of 10 there will be ad agency people chatting about campaigns, either winning them or losing them. That's part of the charm of lunching at Prego. There's no such thing as having a wine too early in the day as everyone's enjoying a great glass. Luckily the food is killer match, their fish dishes are hard to beat. Ditto for their pizza too!
This place is amazing. Delicious food and amazing service. Two friends and I went there before the theatre on Friday night. We arrived at 6:45pm and asked them if it was possible to be out of there by 7:30pm!!! We took the last table available inside (by the drafty door so we were given snuggly blankets, but we didn’t really need them) and the staff guaranteed to serve our meals within 20mins. At 7:15pm we paid for our dinner and waltzed on out. We didn’t even have to rush our dinners (and sides). Amazing. It is also a great place to brings kids of all ages. They have lots of Handi-sitt high-chairs, crayons and paper, etc. I always get the Saltimbocca or the lasagne. And the tomato salad. The fresh baked bread is also famous. EVERYTHING on the menu is delicious. A favorite!
What I love about Prego is that you know what you are going to get and it is always good. It is what a neighbourhood restaurant should be - Reliable, value for money and not too pretentious. The've been around for over 20 years and I would be surprised if they weren't around for another 20 - the place is that good. The food has the classic pasta dishes along with pizza's and other Italian dishes. I find myself coming back to old favourites time and time again but honestly just about everything on the menu looks good. A tip for parents - Come in for a late lunch when it is a little quieter. They have crayons for the little ones and the their is enough space to park the pram.
We go to Prego a lot. Prego does good, simple, tasty Italian food and pizza really well and smothers it all in a big blanket of fabulous service. We ate there last night and an order got missed - but they handled it impeccably and made sure we were very happy by telling us, apologising and offering us some extra snacks for our ten minute wait. We’ll keep going back for the reliably high quality of the setting, food and staff at Prego.
