Best places to break a sweat

  1. 1

In my opinion winter weather in Auckland isn’t that conducive to outdoor fitness activities, so a favourite place to head when I need warming up is the Hot Yoga studio on Broadway. It is beautifully designed, sweet smelling and clean, unlike a few Bikram classes I have tried where the sweaty masses were a bit too much! They also have several styles of yoga to choose from in a heated room, including the super restorative yin that even has a candlelit session happening on Sundays in the late afternoon. Heavenly.

This place is my pick for stellar Pilates classes and now they have added some ballet barre to the mix. Great teacher and a killer workout.

    Urban Ashram
    Ponsonby
If you haven’t experienced a yoga class with the extraordinary Nikki Ralston then you really haven’t lived. A brilliant alternative to the gym any day, her classes in The Ralston Method will stretch and strengthen your body and quieten your mind, with plenty of laughs in the process. She takes group and private classes from her Ponsonby studio the Urban Ashram, and also offers some of the best massages in town.

One of my favourite places to go that’s not too far from Auckland but pleasantly far enough that it feels like a holiday is Pakiri Beach. As well as the horse rides and surfing to occupy your time it is close enough to Leigh to grab coffee and pizza at the Sawmill, and if you come for a weekend then you can’t pass through the Matakana markets without making a stop.

    City Dance
    Auckland Central
Who doesn’t love to bust a move to good music? City Dance on Queen Street offers all kinds of different recreational dance classes including hip hop, salsa and belly dancing. The instructors are friendly and helpful and there are classes to suit all levels, from beginner to advanced. The classes are all about having fun so you don’t need to worry about embarrassing yourself, and you can fit them in around your schedule. it’s a great way to get exercise without feeling like your exercising!

    CITY BOXING
    Auckland Central
I love boxing as a way to get all my stress out after a long day. City Boxing offers awesome and really intense boxing workouts in a convenient central location (Quay Street). The classes aren’t too big so you get lots of individual attention from the instructors, who all really know their stuff. Even if you’ve never boxed before, the instructors will take good care of you and have you feeling like a pro in no time - it’s a very welcoming environment. The workouts are no joke - you’ll leave feeling exhausted (in a good way!)

    Les Mills Britomart
    Auckland Central
I absolutely love the Les Mills classes. I almost never do my own workouts anymore, because I get bored so easily and find it hard to motivate myself to go to the gym and run on a treadmill for an hour staring at the wall. The instructors at Les Mills are all super fit and energetic and it’s hard not to get pumped up in the classes. There’s great music, lots of people and so many different classes to choose from! My personal favourites are Body Attack and Body Pump, but they’re honestly all great.

Paddleboarding is the most amazing ab workout! it may not look like much, but it’s a lot harder than it looks - trust me! it’s a really fun way to spend a gorgeous summer’s day and get toned and tanned at the same time. Just prepare yourself for a sore core the next day!

During the summer in Auckland, I love getting out on the water as much as possible. Kayaking is a surprisingly vigorous workout and you get to enjoy the sun, the ocean and great company at the same time. You won’t even realize what a good workout you’ve gotten until you can’t lift your arms the next day! Ferg’s Kayaks do kayak rentals and lessons, and you can also sign up for excursions like the Rangitoto Adventure, which involves a kayak trip to Rangitoto followed by a hike and picnic lunch.

Get in shape for summer

    Long Bay
    Long Bay
You may have seen 10 year old boys hitting the beach on boards skimming across the shallow water and thought to yourself what on earth are they doing? Well things are as they appear, welcome to the art of skimboarding. It may look easy, but trust me, unless you are a young one with awesome balance or a skilled skateboarder then you will probably end up in the water more than you would like to admit . With enough practice though you will perfect the glide and Long Bay is one of my absolute favourite places to practice. As the name suggests, its long - which means if you head right to the end you get the privacy you need while you work on becoming a pro. Did I mention it is a killer leg workout? Say hello to toned thighs and tight abs. Because the boards are so light make sure to head to the beach when there is little wind and pick up some surf wax on the way for grip. This beach gets packed in the summer time so try and get their before midday to get a park and a prime spot on the sand.

Rock climbing was always one of those extreme sports that I imagined myself being awesome at. Over time I have come to realise that this is probably not going to be the case. Putting my dreams of becoming an extreme athlete aside I have found comfort in the fact that I can head to Extreme Edge, hire a harness and push my limits on the wall. This place is awesome, the staff are friendly, there is always a good atmosphere and the walls are challenging. If you want an all over body workout while pushing yourself mentally then rock climbing is for you. This was the first indoor climbing place I had been to and none of the others have ever come close to being as memorable. Bit of a tip: wear comfortable pants and a top that won’t ride up - you don’t want to be hanging mid air with a wedgie when you are trying to impress a girl.

Yoga has always kind of intimidated me, I’m not the most flexible of people and group classes aren’t really my thing. Deciding to bite the bullet and give it a go I ended up at the Iyengar Yoga Centre on Great North Rd and I was really impressed by the beginners class. Susie was our teacher and she instantly made my partner and I feel welcome. Some of the poses can be a little awkward at first but with a little guidance they are easier to get right. For a first timer like myself I would without a doubt recommend heading along and getting out of your comfort zone, I definitely left feeling a little euphoric - I can see why this would be addictive!

Ok, so it takes a lot for me to say that I love going to the gym - I’m more of an outdoors kind of girl - but Health and Sports in Morningside may have turned me to the dark-side. First off, they have a pool! Secondly, there isn’t that poser vibe that makes me feel like I need to go to the gym with a full face a makeup. The personal trainers are really helpful and there never seems to be much of a wait for any of the machines . For someone who doesn’t like the idea of going to a gym it didn’t take me long to feel at home here.

    Totara Park
    The Gardens
Unless you live out south chances are you’ve never heard of Totara Park - which is a shame because you are missing out! This is a park I have been going to since I was a little kid, draw cards back then were the two awesome adventure playgrounds (especially the hidden one with flying fox) and the horses trotting along one of the treks. Oh and the outdoor pool! Now days its where I head to when I want a decent walk through the bush for a bit of a light workout. With the new addition of mountain biking trails Totara Park is definitely an all rounder.

Kids adventure outings

We go to Kelly Tarlton's at least once a year on camp - and that means we get to sleep over, right in the tunnel under the aquarium where you can see the sharks swimming above you all night. This is an amazing place. They have huge 300kg Stingrays, a giant squid (dead of course) and so many other attractions. It also changes every year. The first year I saw mantis shrimp which are a great find!

I love coming here for parties or relaxation times with the kids. They are always happy to spend a few hours climbing the enormous fig trees or going on adventures down by the massive redwoods. We spent some fun times feeding leaves to cows too! There are toilet facilities nearby and a fancy restaurant if you'd like some delicious tea and scones.

This is a great venue for parties. We spent a whole day here, tiring out kids. There's trampolines of course but also tarzan ropes and climbing areas.

This is a very good high energy kids party place! The staff are great, safety is well monitored. You'll probably want to bring some adults to help belay kids up the wall - or to climb themselves. You don't need ropes to go "bouldering", which is climbing under an overhang. If you fall off you just end up on mats, something I did plenty.

    Muriwai Beach
    Muriwai Beach
This is my favourite beach, we often come here for walks with the kids or do a bit of body surfing. The waves are wild so I stay quite shallow with young kids and we always have a good time. The perfectly calm swimming pool beaches on the east coast are better for really young kids. Another attraction here is the Gannet colony, quite a sight. We sometimes grab some food in Kumeu and park at the beach to eat and watch the sunset.
