Get the kids back in to nature at Kepler Oaks. They’ll love getting to know the horses, rabbit, sheep, chickens and dog – I certainly did! They’ll learn to care for animals, go pony cart riding and explore Lake Te Anau. An amazing experience.

A ski field with amazing views, Mt Hutt is another family activity which is worth a try. The laidback vibe here is all about safety and learning to ski the right way, so if you’re kids are just learning, head to Mt Hutt this winter.

Great travel sites to save money

  1. 1
    1
    Webjet NZ
    Auckland Airport
Booking your flights on Tuesdays, and Thursdays and looking at red-eye flights are two quick ways to save money for your adventure. Comparing lots of discount carriers is a great way to find the cheapest flight - in Australia we mainly use Webjet. Booking packages, and round the world flights can actually reduce costs. If you decide to use a travel agent make sure to double check their prices - All travel agents take a cut, don’t be fooled - just double check and show flight examples. https://www.webjet.co.nz/

Look into renting cheaper cars - avoiding main retailers and going through locals
  3. 3

  4. 4
    4
    Airbnb
    Auckland Central
If travelling as a group or couple - sometimes bunking in shared rooms can actually cost more than renting your own room/place. Make sure to check all the options. Also bunking in shared rooms isn’t necessarily for everyone - if travelling alone, take care of your belongings, and if in an unsafe area decide who is more trusting - hostel owner/travellers. Sometimes bunking alone is the less safe option.

Holiday Hideaways

The Riverside have done such a great job with their cabins, they have thought of everything. As a Matakana local I know how many top notch accommodation options there are in the area, but I feel this one is so great because they have the best range of cabins (a list of the best Bed and Breakfasts around Matakana is a whole different endeavour!). So whether you’re on a getaway with the family or not, the Riverside is truly heavenly if you don’t mind something just a little higher on the price scale. Just a few minutes from Matakana town you are seriously spoilt for choice for food, wine, entertainment and the best beaches in the greater Auckland area - yeah, I said it!

Pakiri Beach Holiday Park is at the top of my holiday hideaways list for good reason - it ticks all the boxes. Firstly, it is one of the most beautiful road trips to take out of Auckland, the drive itself is worth the getaway. The choice of accommodation here is super impressive, they can cater to your getaway whether it’s with your better half, the kids or your mates. Choose from luxury cabins to basic cabins, and caravans to camping spots, with plenty of the cabins located right on the beach front. A well priced and well maintained holiday park.

Hands down Martins Bay is the best and safest place to swim out of the beaches on this list. I’m not sure why but Martins Bay always seems to be so sheltered, so if you’re with family it’s perfect. There’s a pontoon for the kids to swim out to, equipment available for hire and two playgrounds on site. The accommodation choices are also fantastic as there are flats, cabins, caravan and camping sites available. A little friendly advice - a small section of the beach (the end by the ‘other’ boat ramp) is privately owned!

If you’re after real peace and quiet (as in one of those places where it feels like there’s nothing around for miles) then Orongo Point Bach is the spot. Walk down to the private beach - read, swim and relax with your friends and family. It’s all too dreamy here. And this really is an amazing find, with the bach sleeping up to six people for just $150 (through December and January) - need I say get in quick folks? They’re pretty free still for summer bookings.

If you really want to escape the rat race for the weekend and check out one of the most untapped locations in the Auckland region, a couple of nights glam camping on the Awhitu Peninsula is money well spent. Situated on the clifftops above the black sand beauty of Karioitahi Beach is a hidden gem called Castaways Resort and it's one of the most romantic places on earth. Glam camping only takes 48 guests so it pays to book in advance but the resort's accommodation is equally as beautiful.

A taste of village life

    Howick Historical Village
    Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach
Head east and take a stroll through one of Auckland’s oldest precincts, complete with a historic Village. Take the kids to wander through the seven acres that Howick Historical Village is set on - I love the old world charm that’s been carefully preserved in this place. While you’re in the area, grab a coffee at the Apothecary Cafe on Picton St.

Nestled in the Waitakere Hills, going to Titirangi Village feels like escaping the city. Once you’re done relaxing in a cafe or browsing the art shops in the town centre, head out to a nearby beach - Huia has a great fish and chip shop - to really get away from big city life. The best part? It’s barely a half an hour trip back to the city centre. If you plan your trip for a Sunday make sure you swing by the Titirangi Village Markets, an integral hub of village life.

There are so many great things about Devonport; the book stores, the parks, the nearby walks, the wharf, the views, the art galleries - it really is a must-visit destination in Auckland. But the best thing about this village? Going there and back on the downtown ferry. Such a novelty for a city girl!

There is quite possibly nothing better than driving out to Clevedon on a weekend morning and exploring this charming village. What’s not to love about driving past green paddocks, grazing sheep, quaint country scenes and arriving at one of the best markets around - complete with live band and horse rides!? There are also some wonderful cafes and galleries dotted along the main street.

    Coyle Park
    Point Chevalier
Alright, you’ve got me, Coyle Park isn’t technically a village. But it is still at the end of Pt Chevalier road and driving down that boulevard, lined by pohutukawa trees, feels like being in small town New Zealand. The street itself is home to many small shops which are fun to explore, and not a lot beats grabbing fish and chips or an ice cream at one of the local shops then heading down to Coyle Park or Pt Chevalier Beach to pass the afternoon.

Places to stay in Auckland

    Nomads Fat Camel
    Auckland Central
Me and 2 of my friends stayed in this backpackers one night after town. It was about $30 for the night. We stayed in a 6 bed girls only dorm with 2 lovely Dutch girls. We got ready here before town then drank for a bit at the attached Nomad’s Fat Camel bar downstairs. The place was decent and very sociable, and everyone was extremely friendly as tourists seem to always be. Had I actually been a tourist and wanted to utilise all of the facilities on offer it would of been great! They have a sauna, free WIFI, and arrange jobs and daily activities around Auckland for you to do! Very accommodating.

The Rendezvous first came across to me as cheap and someone you would go if you were having an affair just because of the name. But this certainly led me astray because Rendezvous is one of the nicest hotels I have been in and I have travelled the world. The high end fashion/accessory stores and Louis Vuitton bags placed decoratively around the lobby set the vibe for an extremely classy and elegant hotel. My friend and I only got a standard room but it was still very nice and came with full use of the pool and gym which were huge and beautiful. The Rendezvous Grand Hotel is definitely not somewhere to take your mistress, it’s too nice.

The Stamford is a 5 star hotel for those wishing to indulge in a bit of luxury. When you walk into the hotel you immediately wish/expect you were attending a ball in a floor length gown. It is elegantly and lavishly decorated and definitely worth the 5 stars it holds. The bedroom prices vary from what type of room you get and what dates you book, the prices go up and down dramatically based on these just like any other hotel I guess. There are also packages you can buy to enhance your stay such as a romance package that includes a late check out and other cute deals like that.

The Oaks are serviced apartments in Auckland’s Central City. The room in which we stayed overlooked the Ports of Auckland which was really cool at night. It had two balconies, one that overlooked the Port and one that looked out onto Fort street area. The people at reception were always really friendly and really helpful whenever I asked for anything, more towels etc. It was a relatively good price to stay here when you put together the great service, the clean and decent room, the great views. But again you can choose different room and view types for cheaper or less if you wish.

This is another 5 star hotel for those of you who can afford to splash some pennies about. The Langham is where many celebrities visiting New Zealand tend to stay and the likes of Justin Bieber and One Direction have temporarily resided here. If that does not sway your decision in a positive way then all you need to see is some photographic evidence of the aesthetics of this place. It is extremely high class and definitely on the more expensive side of things. The hotel also hosts the well-known restaurant Eight which is a seafood lovers dream. The public are also welcome to have high-tea here which all makes for an extremely classy outing. Best put on your best fake British accent to fit in here!
