When cooking just isn't an option

Ponsonby Central may have some great foodie residents in the house, but for tastiness coupled with value - and speed - you can’t go past the original purveyor or amazing international cuisine at incredible prices. The Ponsonby International Food Court is pretty much always bustling with locals and visitors alike, and the fare is varied and delicious. We love the Vietnamese for its fresh spring rolls and lemongrass chicken, whilst the Massaman curry is the best tasting in town and the fresh juices from the fully licensed bar always appeal. You can’t visit Ponsonby without a trip to the Food Court and definitely won’t leave hungry.

Sliced Lunch Bar on Richmond Road in Grey Lynn is home to the best sandwich filling selection in town in my humble opinion, as well as epic salad offerings and more. Their blackboard sign outside shows the special of the day, and is pretty impossible to drive past without pulling in for a purchase.

    Wishbone Vulcan Lane
    Auckland Central
The Central city is full of food to go options, some healthier than others. One of my picks when I am Downtown and on the go is Wishbone in Vulcan Lane, who serve up both hot and cold, nutritionally sound and yummy meals. As well as the usual sandwich and salad fare they have winter warmers like paella and chunky soups, which you can buy ready to eat or chilled to take home and heat yourself.

    Food Truck Garage
    Auckland Central
Michael Van de Elzen’s TV One show The Food Truck was a huge hit for the Auckland chef, and now the industrial style food destination that shares its name is set to do the same. Serving up his trademark delicious, healthy fast food, it is the perfect spot for a hearty lunch or early dinner on the run and thus far the burger offerings are my standout fave. They even have Hallertau beer on tap, or try the homemade honey lemonade and lavender cola for a real taste sensation.

    7
    Bamboo Kitchen
    Eden Terrace
It has been great to see the proliferation of healthy takeaway options popping up around Auckland, the latest of which is the rather awesome Bamboo Kitchen. They serve up tasty Chinese fare that is heavy on fresh ingredients and naturally good sauces, and their menu is growing by the day. If you love fresh Asian meals then this is definitely the spot for you.

    Otto Woo - Takapuna
    Takapuna Central
Fresh, healthy Chinese fusion takeaways without all that grease. Perfect if you’re in the mood for Chinese, but don’t want a tummy ache after! I love the vegetarian noodle stirfry sprinkled with lots of chopped up peanuts, so good! Comes in the cutest New York style Chinese takeaway boxes too!

    Burger Queen
    Mt Albert
Huge, hearty burgers at super sweet prices! I like the vegetarian burger, with a vege patty plus an egg and pineapple! They also do really good kumara chips and fritters, plus toasties and a huge variety of meaty burgers. The burgers are huge and are about seven bucks. Amaze.
  3. 3

I highly recommend the vegetarian tofu donburi from the Japanese place here. Their sushi is also really good. Or, even healthier is the vegetarian tom yum soup from the Thai place. So flavoursome and extremely low calorie, it is full of vegetables, chilli, ginger, lemongrass and tofu.
  4. 4

Does exactly what it says on the tin! -Huge, cheesy, salty, delicious New York style pizza. Even the cheese pizza here is really good, I also love the veggie with capsicum and mushrooms and a lot of my friends love the pepperoni. They come either large or in individual slices, the NY way! Perfect for a big group of people!

One of my most long-standing fave takeaways. When I lived in England, Burger Fuel was one of the first things I would get when I’d come back to NZ for a holiday. So good. They do quite a good chickpea burger, but my all-time favourite is the combustion tofu, which comes with avocado and satay sauce. I love the kumara chips with aioli too. Oooh! And they do really good little icecreams too! If you can handle that much!!

Aside from perhaps the butter chicken pie from Mobil On the Run gas stations, The Fridge has hands down the best pies in Auckland. It’s a great spot to grab a pastry pocket of goodness and a coffee. My personal favourites are the mince, potatoe and cheese pie and the Morrocan lamb pies. The cabinet food is also great and the staff quirky. Don’t be flaky, get amongst.

Carl’s Jr is the fast food chain for those that are serious about their deep fried food. The Carl’s Jr devotees were out in force tonight and the joint was still hooching at around nine. I ordered the bacon, Swiss, crispy hand-breaded chicken sandwhich, upsized. If it sounds like a mouthful, that’s because it was. The chicken was succulent and the bacon was crispy. My tastebuds were over the moon but I’m not too sure how my heart felt about the meal. Defenitely tasty, but definitely one for the sometimes pile.

    Il Buco
    Ponsonby
Il Buco is one of my favourite places to grab food on the go in Ponsonby. They have a great selection of rectangular slices packed with flavour. My favourite being the potato and sausage. Grab a coffee and a seat for a couple of minutes and watch Ponsonby Road happen.

It’s taken me a while to try Bird on Wire, but when I finally did I was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps it was the idea of an upmarket roast shop didn’t fit in with my ideal Ponsonby lifestyle. I can tell you, I was wrong. I ordered the special which was a korean roll and a side salad. The chicken was moist, the sauces alive and the salad tasty. I’ll be back, mark my words. For the record the birds are also halal! Don’t chicken out, give it a try.

The Food Room is Ponsonby’s answer to Kingsland’s The Fridge. They do good coffee, salads and milkshakes but their standout feature is the pies. I opted for a mince and cheese pie and it was in the same league as the Fridge. Buttery pastry with a premium filling. At around $8 it’s on the pricey side but worth it if you’re on the mood for a pie!

    Fish Fish
    Ponsonby
Fish Fish has the best fish! Lovely and fresh and really competitively priced - even compared to supermarket prices. If you're thinking of cooking at home you can get supplies here - or if you're feeling lazy you can stay and enjoy some fresh fish prepared with love.
  2. 2

What busy little shop. We stopped on our way home for an early dinner. I got a fish burger that was definitely a great burger. The fish here is cooked in beer batter and cooked so that its golden and crunchy, Yum

Two words: Stoked as! That's how I feel about this hot little addition to my local. It's just a skip and a jump from my workplace and I've already wolfed down my body weight in Olivia's divinely wholesome sweet treats and juices. You only need to try one to fall in love and that's The Raw Kitchen's watermelon juice. It's fresh, fruity and filling. Plus they do amazing sandwiches - perfect if you haven't packed your lunch.

For those who love leafy greens or beta-carotene beauties, Bird On A Wire has a cult following because it truly is one of the best salad bars in Auckland. I'm excited that their Ponsonby store is in the heart of Localist's local and it's a regular lunch haunt for the content team at least once a week. I'm a big fan of the summer slaw with apple cider and wholegrain mustard vinaigrette and am pretty excited that my lunch break today will include chowing down on a returning perennial fan favourite - the melt-in-the-mouth sensation that is their char-grilled aubergine, coriander, sesame and sweet soy noodle salad. I wish it was lunch time already! Love you #birdonawirenz

A green smoothie from Ceres Fresh Market in Ponsonby Central was one of my morning rituals when I used to do an early morning yoga class in the city. I love the marketplace vibe of this fantastic fruit and vege store that's bang-smack in the middle of Ponsonby. But to be honest, it's their Liquids for Life smoothies that first brought me here and keep on bringing me back. I started a health kick two years ago and it began with daily morning green juices and smoothies. Ceres do a particularly fantastic creation they call Tropical Green - a blend of cashews, kale, coconut and mango. It tastes like something straight from the wilds of a Pacific Island paradise. Of course, Ponsonby Central is where Auckland's cool kids hang so expect to pay a little more than normal for your smoothie blast here but believe me, it's well worth the investment. I had a smoothie here once a week for a year and was never, ever disappointed. They also do great healthful juices as well.

    Wise Cicada
    Newmarket
When it comes to healthy takeaways, nothing beats a trip to Wise Cicada's on-site cafe. Whether you want to dine in or stock up and take something home with you, this is one of the most fantastic local spots in Auckland for those who like to eat fresh, beautiful healthy food. They always do a selection of salads, a hot dish of the day and raw soup - all of which are available as takeaways. Such an awesome local spot to stop!

The Biggest Ice Creams

  1. 1
    40
It's definitely a huge achievement to be consistently awesome for 40 years, but Ollie's has done it and what I love best about this place is the ice cream. Known as the cheapest in Auckland, Ollie's has huge serves of ice cream at great prices and the sundaes are the retro kind you remember from your childhood. It's always worth a trip out to Royal Oak to visit Ollies.

    Kapiti Store
    Auckland Central
Kapiti Ice Cream is simply all kinds of awesome and I was so excited to find out they have a store in central Auckland that serves up all the varieties of their delicious ice cream. My all-time fave is the gingernut ice cream which is made of gingernut biscuits and crystallised ginger, it has the most divine taste and perfect texture. The serves from this store are huge too, the four scoop is almost too big to eat and they're great value for money, especially considering the quality of the ice cream.
  3. 3

If you're driving north through Matakana you must stop at Blue Ice Cream Cafe which is the home of the amazing OOB Organic Ice Cream. OOB is off the charts as far as ice cream goes, it's made from real fruit and is so delicious, their flavours are really creative too. Blueberry is a personal favourite of mine and you can see and taste the real blueberries which is awesome, I also love the licorice flavour which is much more delicious than you would think, the licorice flavour translates really well into ice cream. This place is super popular in summer though so make sure you allow enough time for a visit. The prices are really good too and you can buy tubs to take away with you.
  4. 4
    3
Pokeno Takeaways is a place you must stop in summer when you're driving south from Auckland. They have a huge selection of ice cream flavours scooped into a cone just like I remember from being a kid. Their prices are pretty laid back too and great value. I'm a fan of the old-school favourites like rum & raisin and hokey pokey of course, but they do have lots of other cool varieties including peanut butter. This place is also famous for their 15 scoop ice cream so if you're feeling like an ice cream fest it's well worth a try, although you might need some help from your friends!
  5. 5
    2
As a shore kid I've been coming to this place for an ice cream after a visit to Takapuna beach for as long as I can remember. It's so cool to go to a local dairy by the beach that still serves fresh ice cream in a cone. They have a great range of flavours, although being a classics fan myself I usually go with hokey pokey or chocolate, but the serving sizes are really generous and good value. Always nice to have a cool down with some great ice cream after a hot day in the sun.
