If you’d like to climb rocks, explore native forest and meat some local seals, then grab the cruise boat and head forth – Mitre Peak Cruises are the best in helping you explore the Milford Sound in a fun and educational way!

A ski field with amazing views, Mt Hutt is another family activity which is worth a try. The laidback vibe here is all about safety and learning to ski the right way, so if you’re kids are just learning, head to Mt Hutt this winter.

Amazing winter weekend break - Mt.Ruapehu

  1. 1
    3
    Rapu Adventures
    Piha North
These guys started as a New Zealand’s first surf tour company of its kind. NZST evolved over the years originally offering only a One Day Surf Tour and Surf School to 7 Day Surf Tours and finally they finally they took on the winter months and since 2004 offer skiing and snowboarding tours. The name changed naturally from New Zealand Surf Tours to New Zealand Surf and Snow Tours and currently to RAPU. Just for you to know Rapu means in Maori language ‘to seek’, which describes ultimately what is this crew about - seeking adventure. They are operating in small groups and once you know you want go - they’ll they you how and what to do there! Plus, their prices are very competitive. Check them out on their website: www.rapuadventures.com

Sarah Cate is your girl. She knows the Tongariro Crossing from upside down. She’s all about the safety too - and when she feels it’s safe to go up - you’re going to have a blast seeing the beauty of the hike like anytime before. This is for those who are hikers - it’s hard hike - even though everybody is talking about it, it’s still hard. So if you want to do it make sure you are fit and ready. Tour costs $185.00pp which includes all equipment (you can basically walk in with flipflops and she’ll gear you up from hat and gloves, jackets and pants, to boots), transport & Guides. http://www.adventureoutdoors.co.nz/#/tongariro-crossing-in-winter/4569766115

Did you know Mt.Ruapehu is not only about skiing or snowboarding? Give tobogganing or sledding a go. Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Fields have amazing sledging slides and it’s lots of fun, if you are not a skier or snowboarder but still want to have snow fun! Either you arrange it yourself or you can check Rapu Adventures again. Those guys are not specializing in skiing or snowboarding trips, but at Weekend Snow Tours which include transport, accommodation, food (breakfast and dinner) and they arrange any special activities on top you want.

Around forty minutes’ drive from the city,Hampton Downs MotorSport Park is the home of driving legends, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come to stay and play too. They have regular public driving days where you can book in a few laps here and there, as well as racing experiences available depending on your badge of choice. A voucher for a trip around the track in a Lotus, Ferrari or Lamborghini makes for a great gift for the speed freaks in your life too, and definitely won’t go unused.

    Hyper Stimulator NZ
    Hampton Downs
A spot loved by Auckland adrenaline junkies is Papatoetoe’s Hyper Stimulator New Zealand – the home of racecar simulation in New Zealand. Hyper Stimulator offers not only real race car drivers – like fan Jonny Reid - a valid and valuable training tool, but also everyday drivers the chance to experience what it is like to be at the wheel of a V8 Supercar. A great day out for groups too.

    Canyonz
    Swanson
Like the idea of abseiling down waterfalls, jumping off cliffs and sliding down polished rock chutes, all in a prehistoric, subtropical environment? Then a day with Canyonz is definitely for you. Blue Canyon has 18 waterfalls, ranging in height from 2 to 30 metres, and the easy part is the handy pickup from – and drop off - outside SkyCity!

    SkyJump Ltd
    Auckland Central
SkyCity is where you'll find New Zealand's highest jump (pictured). Called SkyJump, it is one of Auckland City's “don't miss!” experiences - leaping off Auckland's famous Sky Tower - 192 metres straight down! You'll fall very fast (approximately 85 kph) for around 11 seconds, and then it’s a smooth landing below. They also offer the SkyWalk, which let’s you walk 360 degrees around the Sky Tower with nothing but air either side of you.

On a wet and horrible day i find there is nothing better than escaping the reality of the outdoors by catching a movie at Hoyts in Wairau, with the cinemas always being warm and clean and giving myself an excuse to consume large amounts of movie food, it always helps the rain down the drain!

I’m a Sunday drive kind of guy but that’s out the window for me if the weather is wet and raining, usually in this situation i get myself to Action Raceway and get straight into the Go Karts. Fast pace, loud and exciting this place usually leaves me hoping for rain again next Sunday!

Nothing beats winding down a rainy afternoon by catching a flick at Berkeley Cinema in Takapuna, walking up the stairs to the foyer and smelling that fresh popcorn the closer you get really makes me forget about the weather and enjoy the atmosphere in the cinema.
