This delightful sea-side cafe is in remembrance to the life saving club that burnt down in 2009. The beautiful food and old school atmosphere leaves for the cafe’s patrons waiting up to an hour during prime Sunday brunch time. The food and drink is well worth the wait, and I have never known of someone who has left disappointed. I recommend splashing out and treating yourself to a full breakfast.

The nature setting and animals at Staglands make it an ideal spot for a family day out or romantic afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Both adults and kids will love meeting the critters in the barn, a bushwalk or cart ride and a picnic or cafe lunch.

So many spots to choose from! Over summer, a night of food and drink on the lawn at the Sound Shell while listening to a live show is divine, while the hill by the playground and The Dell are also awesome spots for eating, drinking and sunbathing!

Pack a picnic and hit the sand at Oriental Bay. The rocky sand means it won’t fly up and get in your food, while there’s New World on the way to grab some last-minute treats! After filling up, lie down in the sun and digest for 30 minutes before a splash in the sea.

The top of Mount Vic is ideal for a picnic (especially a romantic one) during the day or night. Get intrepid and climb the mountain or drive to the top, sit down and look out over the city or stargaze! Bliss!

It was with a heavy heart I discovered the Kapiti cheese and ice cream shop here had closed. Luckily, there’s still the farm you can visit to meet heaps of cute animals - and you can even pack your own cheese for a picnic in the sun on a fine day. An awesome escape from the city!

On a sunny day, all of Wellington flocks to Oriental Bay and the waterfront – and for good reason (specifically: you can’t beat Wellington on a good day). Get a head start with a two- or four-person bike from the Enormous Crocodile Company for a family day out.

The Museum of City & Sea is a great way to wile away a couple of hours for families with older children. Learn about the history of Wellington and its surrounds in an interactive, engaging space. The ‘historic port’ display is especially impressive.

Te Papa has plenty to engage kids of all ages, from the interactive learning space for the little ones to the more challenging exhibits for teenagers and even 20-somethings. The contemporary New Zealand history features, like the earthquake simulator and Golden Years exhibit, are especially engaging. There’s so much to get through you won’t be able to see it all in one go, so perhaps spread it over a couple of trips to the capital.

It might not be much to write home about for the university students and Kelburn residents who use it as a form of transport everyday, but the little ones are bound to be impressed by a ride on the cable car – especially when they go through the tunnel. Make an afternoon of it with the museum and the botanic gardens at the top.

The Carter Observatory is a great place to take older children or teenagers to fuel – or jumpstart – their interest in the world around them, as well as the galaxy it occupies. With a revolving array of exhibits, some of them set to music, there’s plenty to occupy stargazers of all ages. The observatory is open every day until 5pm, except Saturdays when they’re open late so you can use the Thomas Cooke telescope.

Feel like a jog with some scenery, I’d recommend here!

A quick hike up to one of the many lookouts on Mt Victoria will give you the prettiest view out over Wellington, and the waterfront. Stop at Mt Vic Chippery, or Five Boroughs for a bite on your way!

Sometimes you just need to get out of the harsh, bleak human domain and get back to the natural world! I could spend days wandering the beautiful paths of the Wellington Botanical gardens, and would highly reccomend visiting to anyone!

Oriental parade is one of the most idyllic places in Wellington, the norfolk pines and fairy lights make for a dreamy combination, especially on a balmy summer night. Grab some gelato from Kaffe Eis, and enjoy the beautiful view of Wellington harbour.

This is a house covered in sound-activated christmas lights. The display runs through Thursday 16th – Friday 24th December, and you can find it at 190 Oriental Parade.

If you're driving the coast road around to Gisborne, stopping of here after you drive through Ohope is a must do. A proper little fish and chip takeaways you can get a full meal if you like and sit and look out over the oyster farm. Or just grab a few oysters at $1 each. I stop every time - it's tradition!

They run a bunch of adventure activities you can do around the East cape - however the one I did with them was the Rere Rock Sliding! This was amazing fun, I was feeling a little dusty after a day at the Gisborne Wine & Food Fest and this set me to rights. They drive you about half and hour out of Gisborne and then give you a wetsuit (or maybe two if it's really cold) and an inflatable boogie board and you rip down a 60m rock slide! Its awesome! You can always head up to Rere by yourself but its nice to get taken around by a local who knows where the Champagne pools are to take a dip in afterward!

There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. The bush walks in Polhill reserve are all amazing, whether you go for 20 mins, or a whole day. Its a neat way to see the different little niches and communities within Wellington. You can walk right up to the Zealandia ridge fence, and definitely see some native birds.

This walk is one you'll want to come prepared for! I would recomend bringing along an amazing picnic to enjoy at the top while you enjoy the spectacular view.

Mt Vic is my go-to destination for central city hiking, cycling, mountain biking, and sight seeing. You can start from anywhere, and make the adventure as big or small as you'd like...Pack a picnic to enjoy on one of the many grassy knolls, and be sure you've got ample phone battery for those instagram pics!

Rimutaka forest park is a relatively short drive from central Wellington. The perfect place to submerge yourself in New Zealand's serene native bush, and get some exercise in while you're at it! Once you've worked up a sweat, cool off in the tranquil river, and treat yourself to a cold beer on the rocky shore!

Battle Hill Farm is a great place to take the family for a genuine kiwi agricultural experience! The walking tracks take you to some spectacular views, and the friendly eels are a great novelty also! Camping sites are private, and spacious, and the swimming hole will be sure to be a hit with the little ones!

Out of all the pizza chains in New Zealand, Hells is by far the most superior. With endless options of pizza toppings and interesting sides, its a menu that wont disappoint.
