Best op shops

You need to set aside some time to do the SaveMart experience properly. Grab a trolley at the front and make your way around, grabbing anything and everything that catches your eye. Then, take everything to a dressing room and work your way through it. It can take a while, but you can find so many great clothes for super cheap.

Love this place. Everything is organised by colour and illustrations and quotes from The Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess cover the walls. The clothes are always in good condition and the staff are lovely. And the Inner Link bus stops right outside. How convenient!

You can score some great bargains here. The shop is really well organised and if you keep your eyes peeled you might just find some great brands for really cheap. And the Red Cross is a really good cause, so it’s a win-win!

    Onopshop
    St Heliers
Onopshop combines the convenience of online shopping with the awesomeness of op shopping. They have a wide selection of clothes to choose from and you can browse from the comfort of your couch, in your pyjamas if want. They also have beautiful handmade jewellery for sale. Once you spot something you just have to have, delivery is nice and quick. Definitely worth checking out.

Eastern Bays Hospice Shop has so much great stuff, and it’s constantly changing. They always have lots of great furniture that doesn’t even need a revamp, and there’s a big back room full of books, more furniture and lots of crafty stuff, like knitting needles and fabric scraps. Plenty of parking, too. Well worth a visit.

Secondhand Heaven

    The White Elephant
    Auckland Central
This place is honestly my favourite place to look for eclectic bits and pieces especially clothes. They have a large collection of racks filled with every garment imaginable and most of my favourite secondhand finds are from here. Plus it’s super fun to have a look around at all the random bit and bobs they have on sale.

You have to rummage around in this store a bit to find what you want, but the colour coordinated racks make it easy to go looking for specifics. The turnaround of the stock here is amazing too, I often come back a couple of weeks between visits to find completely new stuff, which is awesome. The wall mural in the shop is also super cute, and well worth a good look.

The sheer size of this shop is amazing and some of my favourite finds are from here. I went once to buy one skirt I saw in the window and came out with an armful of amazing garments which I have since put to good use. They also have a really good range of shoes, which I’m usually pretty wary about getting from an op shop but here they have heaps and they’re really high quality especially for secondhand.

You know who your true friends are when you can get through a trip to this massive op-shop with them. This place is massive and you definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to trawl through the seemingly endless racks of clothes. You’re bound to find something great though, and it can be a lot of fun to try on all the ridiculous stuff you might come across in the randomly stacked rows.

This is my favourite Newmarket haunt and I could spend hours rifling through the racks. They have heaps of vintage pieces that you feeling like you’re getting for a steal. A lot of op shops have racks of things that are a bit average, but most of the clothes here are really quality and you don’t have to do a lot of trawling to find something you love which is nice.

It’s well worth jumping on the bus to Miramar to explore Mary Potter. Their selection of furniture and homewares is perfect for outfitting your flat, and there is plenty of quality vintage to be found amongst the racks of clothing. Also the staff are really, really cute.

Although Ziggurat’s prices are a big higher than your average second hand store, you pay for the quality you find here. Boasting a huge selection of ’40s and ’50s dresses, as well as dapper menswear, Ziggurat is ideal for finding a special occasion outfit with a difference. They also have a range of upmarket modern labels.

This is the best vintage store in Auckland. The owner Driss Lambaraa has exquisite taste and everything in the store has been carefully handpicked by him. From my Frye boots to my original 1950's baby blue dress - I can thank Driss for many of the favourite things in my wardrobe.  He has styled me for so many events I've lost count!  He also has a great collection of furniture and art.  It's a joy to spend time in his beautiful store.

Trelise Cooper's gorgeous Britomart store is all kinds of wonderful. It perfectly showcases her expansive ranges in a light and airy space that is modern and fresh. Conveniently her Boardroom store also adjoins her main store so you can shop for workwear, daywear, one of her fabulous party dresses or any kind of outfit at the same time. Contemporary fashion that helps you look and feel confident is Storm's speciality. They design stellar collections that include many pieces that transition from day to night so you can be assured that you will always look great in their outfits. They excel in well-tailored blazers, pants and shirts, not too mention their chic evening outfits which have just the right amount of sensual allure. Clothes that drape perfectly and make you feel like a goddess are what TK Store does oh so well. Designer Turet Knuefermann has mastered the art of creating the most flattering shapes that beautifully flatter the female form. Her slinky evening dresses are especially popular for their sultry glamour and it's not hard to see why. She uses luxurious fabrics like silk to make the wearer look and feel amazing which is a pretty addictive thing. Her chic day wear is also very popular and it's brilliantly complemented by her fabulous range of accessories too. Service is everything at TK Store and you will more often than not find yourself greeted with a fresh coffee on arrival and expert help to choose a great outfit for you.

    Hailwood
    Newton
It's impossible not to love Hailwood's unique designs which combine the creativity of his graphic design background with his sharp eye for tailoring and construction. His collections are always a fantastic mix of everyday wearable pieces, especially his cool printed t shirts, and evening wear which is seductive and oh so glamorous. Hailwood's K'Rd store is also occasionally manned by Adrian Hailwood himself as he likes to stay in touch with what his customers are after and provide the best possible service. Anything you buy from Hailwood you will definitely treasure.

    Kate Sylvester Britomart
    Auckland Central
Kate Sylvester creates the clothes that pretty much every kiwi woman wants to wear. She has nailed that wonderful mix of feminine and elegant yet still practical and very wearable. Her collections consist of pieces that update your look each season while still being timeless and very flattering. She has a more intellectual take on fashion too and it's not uncommon for her range to reference literary inspiration with her own sometimes quirky take on history and pop culture. KS stores are some of the most beautiful I have encountered and her Britomart one is my favourite for it's spacious nature and gorgeous displays. The staff here are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble to help you find the right KS piece to add to your wardrobe. With such wonderful service and charming garments, you'll want to come back to Kate Sylvester over and over again.
