Where to shop for women

Metro Retro used to be Fast and Loose which was everyone’s favourite so they had big shoes to fill. The store is very small and the aisles are awkwardly sized, especially because I usually stroll up from uni so have a big bag on me which ends up hitting things/people over. But this aside I do like the clothes in Metro Retro and that is all it is really about at the end of the day. I have found many a gem in here before but my only critique is the layout. Perhaps they need to refer back to Fast and Loose’s layout to make the place work because at the moment it makes you feel like a bull in a china shop I love love love op shopping so this is definitely the place for you if you are searching for some vintage pieces.

    Search & Destroy
    Auckland Central
Search and Destroy is definitely one of the better op shops in the whole of Auckland and as an op shop connoisseur this is a big call from me! I have never ever visited this shop and left without buying something. As a genuine vintage store, this shop will have you dressed as an indie hipster in no time. The store isn’t that big but the clothes obviously aren’t ordered or anything so it takes a wee while to get through everything and you do want to make sure you search hard because it is easy to overlook something which could be a gem!

Kookai is one of my favourite women’s fashion stores. The shops are located at many different locations around New Zealand but the best in my opinion would be the Broadway one inside the 277 mall. All the stores have a very stylish and high class interior, with neat racks presenting the clothes in a very ordered manner. The Broadway store however is a bit bigger than the other ones with more stock therefore more selection for your fashion desires! Can always guarantee you will find a nice dress here for a night out or nice dinner.

    Wild Pair Queen Street
    Auckland Central
I find something here every time I come here, the only thing that stops me from purchasing is my income or there lack of. The girls are always really friendly (obviously fake, but still) and although they are probably just lying when you come out of the changing room and they say it looks really good, it is still nice to have someone lie to keep your dignity in tact. But in all seriousness they are usually very helpful especially with accessorizing and creating outfits, etc. This is a great place to come if you are looking for something to wear for the weekend last minute because there is always great stuff in the sale racks.

    Smoove
    Auckland Central
I have been a fan of Smoove since way back so it is good to see it has gotten more and more popular and moved into a bigger store a little further along the arcade. Smoove is full of eccentric and vintage inspired pieces for the more eclectic fashionista. I remember coming here in as a 7th former and being amazed over the belt buckles that spun around, they have all sorts of quirky stuff like that here. Recently I have been in and found that they have reworked the place so that their items aren’t as off the tangent as they previously were but still have that unique flair that makes them from Smoove. I love this store and I hope the owners are still around because they always made each trip entertaining!

Best second-hand and vintage shops

Tatty’s is one of my favourite places in Auckland. Not only do I buy tons of stuff there, but I sell my old clothes, purses and shoes back to them. Everything in the shop is in great condition and organized really well by colour and/or by garment (dresses, pants, coats, etc.) I love that I often find designer digs for a fraction of the price - and sometimes the items are brand new! I also spot lots of things I wouldn’t normally be able to find in New Zealand. You have to hunt around a little bit, but I almost never leave empty-handed.

    Antique Alley
    Mount Eden
As one of the only people I know who enjoys the show ‘Antiques Roadshow’, it’s no surprise that Antique Alley is a favourite shop of mine. Just walking through the shop is an experience - there’s so much cool stuff packed into one small space! Jewellery, costume jewellery, sterling silver, kiwiana, old furniture, chinaware, postcards…. an antique lover’s treasure trove!

    Nu to U
    Parnell
As a self-confessed shopaholic, I’m always looking for places that will provide me with gorgeous fashion while preserving my bank account. Nu to U is a recycled clothing boutique in Parnell that’s been around since 1987. It specializes in local and international designer brands. Nu to U is not just any old used clothing store - the owner accepts only the best in stock, which is why all of the clothes are in impeccable shape. If you’re new to op shops, this is probably the perfect place to ease yourself in - you definitely won’t get that icky, old, somebody-else’s-clothes feeling here!

Encore is a great used-clothing store in Ponsonby that always seems to have lots of flowy skirts and hippie-chic clothing in stock. Unlike Tatty’s (where I almost never leave empty-handed), Encore is a little bit more hit-or-miss. But every once in a while I find an amazing piece for a steal of a price, which is what keeps me coming back!

    Fuzzy Vibes Junction
    Auckland Central
If you’re stuck in the 70s or 80s, this place is your dream come true! it’s a bit hard to find, nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of K Road with not much signage to alert you of its presence. You then have to navigate your way down a dark, steep staircase to enter the shop. But once inside you’ll find yourself in throwback utopia - tin lunchboxes, brogues, flared pants, helmet hairdryers and vintage memorabilia galore! it’s not often I’d buy something for everyday wear here, but it’s great for having a browse or scooping up an outfit for a fancy-dress party.

The boutique store is absolutely adorable in a great location, but the best thing about Bobbi Brown by far is the amazing girls that work there. They go above and beyond to ensure you get the best out of your skin and always leave there feeling fab.

    Sunglass Bar Vulcan Lane

Getting ya decked from the Tip-Top ya can’t forget about stunners. And you need not look any further then here. There really is no other sunglass store that can compete. As well as having all the designer brands Sherry also brings into the country limited edition runs for a select few. And she will give you an honest opinion on what style of glasses would suit your facial structure

There are only two spots I’d personally recommend to get lined up nice & fresh (Keps and New Flava). And the boys at Keps Barbershop are the business.

Best op shops

You need to set aside some time to do the SaveMart experience properly. Grab a trolley at the front and make your way around, grabbing anything and everything that catches your eye. Then, take everything to a dressing room and work your way through it. It can take a while, but you can find so many great clothes for super cheap.
  2. 2

Love this place. Everything is organised by colour and illustrations and quotes from The Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess cover the walls. The clothes are always in good condition and the staff are lovely. And the Inner Link bus stops right outside. How convenient!

You can score some great bargains here. The shop is really well organised and if you keep your eyes peeled you might just find some great brands for really cheap. And the Red Cross is a really good cause, so it’s a win-win!

    Onopshop
    St Heliers
Onopshop combines the convenience of online shopping with the awesomeness of op shopping. They have a wide selection of clothes to choose from and you can browse from the comfort of your couch, in your pyjamas if want. They also have beautiful handmade jewellery for sale. Once you spot something you just have to have, delivery is nice and quick. Definitely worth checking out.

Eastern Bays Hospice Shop has so much great stuff, and it’s constantly changing. They always have lots of great furniture that doesn’t even need a revamp, and there’s a big back room full of books, more furniture and lots of crafty stuff, like knitting needles and fabric scraps. Plenty of parking, too. Well worth a visit.

Secondhand Heaven

    The White Elephant
    Auckland Central
This place is honestly my favourite place to look for eclectic bits and pieces especially clothes. They have a large collection of racks filled with every garment imaginable and most of my favourite secondhand finds are from here. Plus it’s super fun to have a look around at all the random bit and bobs they have on sale.
  2. 2
    15
You have to rummage around in this store a bit to find what you want, but the colour coordinated racks make it easy to go looking for specifics. The turnaround of the stock here is amazing too, I often come back a couple of weeks between visits to find completely new stuff, which is awesome. The wall mural in the shop is also super cute, and well worth a good look.
  3. 3

The sheer size of this shop is amazing and some of my favourite finds are from here. I went once to buy one skirt I saw in the window and came out with an armful of amazing garments which I have since put to good use. They also have a really good range of shoes, which I’m usually pretty wary about getting from an op shop but here they have heaps and they’re really high quality especially for secondhand.
  4. 4

You know who your true friends are when you can get through a trip to this massive op-shop with them. This place is massive and you definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to trawl through the seemingly endless racks of clothes. You’re bound to find something great though, and it can be a lot of fun to try on all the ridiculous stuff you might come across in the randomly stacked rows.
  5. 5
    6
This is my favourite Newmarket haunt and I could spend hours rifling through the racks. They have heaps of vintage pieces that you feeling like you’re getting for a steal. A lot of op shops have racks of things that are a bit average, but most of the clothes here are really quality and you don’t have to do a lot of trawling to find something you love which is nice.
