A Perfect Funeral - Auckland

If you are looking for an elegant, beautiful funerals. Intimate care of the living and those who have passed. State of Grace are a bunch of wonderful women who know how to care, celebrate and grieve for those who have died.

Modern, New Zealand coffins that are eco friendly. Not one of those nasty PDF caskets. Greg Holdsworth, returned suddenly to New Zealand upon the death of his fatherin-law. Having returned to Auckland Greg and his wife, Leanne, came to grips with the body laid to rest in a coffin in the family home then noticed something just wasn’t right. While standing by the coffin Greg noticed the ‘metal’ handles weren’t cold and discovered they were, in fact, plastic made to look like metal. On closer inspection he discovered that the coffin wasn’t what it seemed either, it was MDF with a plastic woodgrain applied to the outside. Even the lining material was artificial. If the environmental aspects of this discovery wasn’t enough he was struck with a feeling that the values of the coffin in no way matched the values of the man. The coffin in the photo is from Return to Sender. Beautiful

Perfect place for an Auckland city funeral. The old church is now a hall so no problem using a celebrant. There are lots of beautiful spaces for people to meet and gather.

Best spot to watch live music

  1. 1
    29
    1885 Britomart
    Auckland Central
1885 Britomart plays host to some great live music events, including a new weekly night by the name of Music & People. The format is simple, each week a different local band will sit down and spin some yarns before playing a stripped back set. Later local djs and electronic artists will kick off an ‘after party of sorts’. This unique concept is coupled with great food and beverage specials. Defenitely worth a look.

    Spark Arena
    Auckland Central
Vector Arena is Auckland’s answer to the Madison Square Gardens. It’s the venue to see world class acts from accross the board. Tonights entertainment is Dizzee Rascal and Azealia Banks, both did not dissapoint. As Dizzee said ”…It’s always love.”

    Whammy Bar
    Auckland Central
Last night Auckland based rock band Popstrangers played their final NZ show for a while at Whammy, and it was a winner. The night reminded me why Whammy Bar is one of my favourite places to watch live music in Auckland. The room was dark and hot, the beers cheap and the music loud. After emerging from downstairs, my shirt was pretty much soaked through with sweat but it didn’t matter, what else was I to expect?

    Galatos
    Auckland Central
As a venue it seems like Galatos isn’t used as much as it used to be. Anyways, every so often the venue hosts a great show and the dingy, cave like establishment comes to life. Although the sound is sometimes lacking, the venue makes up for it in character.

Known to host a lot of great local and international bands the Kings Arms is one of Auckland’s premier live venues. The venue may not look like much but it is steeped in Kiwi music history and when the venue is packed it really comes to life.

Where to get your groove on

  1. 1

    Rakinos Cafe & Bar
    Auckland Central
Always a reliable place for a boogy on the weekend. Open late, with generally DJ’s spinning hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae and dub. Prices are reasonable. Dancefloor gets started generally a little late (midnight), so can be a good place to chill for the first part of the night, then dance til late!

    Galatos
    Auckland Central
With lots of live acts coming through Auckland, Galatos is really upping their game! The refurbishments over the past few years have made it into a fantastic live venue. The bar staff are polite and quick and the door staff are friendly, which actually means a lot to me! I hate feeling harassed from the moment I get to a bar. These guys are really friendly and only get serious if they need to. Tickets are generally pretty affordable too. The little bar upstairs serves as a welcome breather from the large dance floor downstairs too.

Best Wedding Venues

    Hopetoun Alpha

My friends got married here, had the dinner and dance all in the same place. You can use your own caterers and bring all your alcohol. So nice to be in an historic building in the centre of Auckland. Excellent wedding venue.

The Sapphire Room is one of the best venues in Auckland. Daniel who runs the space is great to deal with making any event a breeze. Having such a beautiful urban space that is centrally located is awesome! I liked it so much I got married here!

Amazing wedding venues

  1. 1

    The Wharf
    Northcote Point
This is where I got married and it is absolutely stunning. I wanted somewhere right on the water that felt elegant and classy and showed off NZ (I am Canadian and wanted a special experience for all the Canadian guests coming over). As soon as I saw the Grand View Room in The Wharf, I knew that I had to get married there. It’s a circular building sitting on the water just under the Harbour Bridge with windows all the way around. The views are stunning and the venue itself is so beautiful it needs very little decoration. The food is also delicious!

    4
    The Floating Pavilion
    Auckland Central
Another waterfront venue, this one in the viaduct, with beautiful views and wrap-around decks. The central location is very convenient and the building is literally floating on the water (hence the name), so you can’t get much closer to the sea. You have the option to make your arrival via boat, with all your guests looking on from the deck - pretty cool!

This beautiful, rustic-looking villa is a great wedding spot. You’ll feel like you’re in Italy without having to splash the cash to actually get there! I’d also highly recommend Mantells on the Water, which is in the viaduct and is equally amazing.

    Alberton House
    Mount Albert
This old colonial house in Mt. Albert reminds me a bit of ‘The Notebook’ (AKA the most romantic movie of all time!) so what better place to hold your upcoming nuptials? it won’t suit big weddings but would be perfect for a small, intimate occasion.
  5. 5

This is a bit of a drive from Auckland City, which makes transportation to and from the wedding a bit of a hassle, but the location is worth it! Situated in the beautiful Waitakere Ranges, I’ve been to two weddings here and was blown away both times by how perfect everything was. The first wedding rained all day long and nobody even noticed, which says a lot I think!
