Cool places to get a drink

We often enjoy going down to Ragu as it's walking distance from where we live. The service provided is excellent and they always make us feel very welcome. The food tastes delicious and is great value for money. Sometimes, when we are looking for a place to have a light meal and unwind with a glass of wine, we'll head down to Ragu.

We had the most memorable birthday celebration at the Fish restaurant. The food and service provided to us was truly amazing. Will definitely go back again for the excellent food. The staff treated us so well, that we had the best dining experience ever. For great service and great seafood, FISH is the place to go to.

Went to Freddy's Ice House and had the most amazing coolest experience. The ice statues are beautiful and having our cocktails in the ice glasses was amazing. We truly enjoyed ourselves as the staff took lots of photos and took very good care of us.

For brunch on the run try the tuna toastie toasted (sans cheese in my case). Simple and delcious.

Yum Char is traditionally eaten as a morning tea, or as we like to call it - brunch. I'd eat Yum Char anytime of the day or night, but at around 11.30am is ideal for fresh dumplings delciousness.

My favourite pubs

  1. 1

The aptly named Pile Driver... I think this may be quite new on the menu at Galbraith's (at least I've never seen it before and I visit Galbraith's at least every couple of weeks). If I'm ordering food at a pub, I have a hard time going past a burger therefore, for someone who visits pubs fairly frequently I've munched my way through a fairly diverse range of meat-in-bun meals.  This qualifies me to say... What an awesome burger! All the good things in a pub burger in generous portions, loads of cheese, loads of gherkins, loads of chilli sauce, and a thick juicy beef patty. Burgery heaven. And if you're not convinced by my opinion, I was at a table of five having lunch  - the Pile Driver was the winner, they all had food envy.  It's worth noting it's standard practise to get a side of fries/chips with a pub burger but this isn't the case at Galbraith's... if you want chips you have to order them as a side (extra) - the staff member let me know this when I was ordering. I was fine without, it was only lunch and a decent sized burger is plenty enough food for me, without the risk of needing an afternoon snooze under my desk. I think given they didn't appear to be super-busy the meals could have come out sooner, so not quite 5 stars, but worth the wait. Washing it down with an Emerson's IPA while sitting in the sun on their top deck... in the middle of winter no less! Galbraith's delivers again.

    Northcote Tavern
    Northcote Point
This isn't necessarily the closest pub to my house but it's my first choice when I want to go to a pub near home. It has two separate areas easily thought of as the working-man's half (complete with leaners, darts, pokies room and a TAB) and the family half (more comfortable to bring the kids or your Mum and Dad!). The food is solid, tasty, well made pub grub and being a family owned pub (they live upstairs) the staff are all very welcoming and friendly. They also have one of the best beer gardens you could ever want. Look out Summer! The beer selections could be a bit broader for my likings but that is the only thing I could be critical about.

Sitting outside in the sun ... drinking a cool beer and enjoying some quality pub fish and chips. Simple pleasures. Thanks Puhoi Hotel, keep up the great work, and I'll keep using your pub to break up north bound road trips

Such a cool spot hidden in one of the lanes in Britomart. Great tunes, plenty of heating making it a perfect outdoor spot for an Autumn evening of catching up with friends.

Places for a Ladies Afternoon Tea

I love a cafe that thinks outside the square when it comes to brunch and lunch options, and Ponsonby Central’s Foxtrot Parlour does just that. They don’t get much better than pulled pork Banh Mi and amazing Empire Eggs, washed down with some of the sharpest coffee in town.

I am a regular at both the Newmarket and CityWorks Depot branches of Dry & Tea, and not just visiting to get my hair done. They are absolutely passionate about beautiful teas too, and stock the most amazing range from T2 that includes my favourites: Liquorice Legs and Gorgeous Geisha. They even have tea-related gifts you can buy and take home, like Limoges cup and saucer sets at $199 a pop! Now THAT is every day luxury.

Fred’s can be found in the space formerly known as Agnes Curran at the top of Franklin Road, but has a very different vibe. They now have a full menu for starters, although some of the cabinet favourites from Agnes still feature and are still mouth wateringly good. The coffee is superb and the service relaxed but sharp, and the banana bread is a new must have. Love this place.

    Monterey

We love the laid back, almost retro vibe of Monterey in West Lynn, and their eggs bene selection is the best in the ‘hood. I go for roast tomatoes and watercress, but there also all manner of meaty options and some great sides!

Easily the city’s poshest spot for High Tea, with an incredible tea menu and bubbles on offer to boot. They even offer little takeaway boxes to transport wee treats home when you’re tummy is full, meaning a lovely surprise to enjoy later on!

So, this place is a cozy wee nook in Ponsonby Central but my, my, it has some very spectacular Spanish/Mexican food! I had the clam, squid and chorizo paella and broccolini to share with my squeeze, and a killer virgin margarita, and we both left full and happy. The interior is fabulous and the atmosphere buzzing. Go there now.

Great, chill place for a first date. Lots of noise and distraction but you can still cosy up! Try the pulled pork sandwiches or the Welsh Rarebit. Much better, ambiance wise, than getting a curry down the road.

Mexico is pretty awesome for a date or double date. The drinks are killer, the tacos are out of this world and the fried chicken is a must eat! All this for around $20-30 pp depending on how much you drink? Amazing.

Fill your own beer growlers

  1. 1
    46
Deep Creek Brewing Company is a hidden gem in the North Shore’s ‘Bays’ and is a well known watering hole for locals. Stop by on the first Wednesday of the month (make sure you book in advance!) for ‘Ribs Night’ where you will get to experience ‘all you can eat’ ribs! Not just any ribs - possibly the best ribs in Auckland! While enjoying the ribs, order a drinks platter to try out a handful of their speciality craft beer on tap. The NZ Pale Ale and IPA are both great, but make sure you ask if there are any limited edition special releases on tap! Because Deep Creek Brewing Company also has an off licence, don’t forget to purchase a flagon or growler (or bring your own!) to take home your favourite brew and keep enjoying the taste of your favourite Deep Creek brew. The take home price is very cheap, so its hard to resist!
  2. 2
    3
The Herne Bay Cellar is the original fill your own beer flagon/growler in Auckland. While they don’t have as many taps or as high a turn over as some of the recent growler fillers in Auckland, they are one of the cheapest and always have a good selection of 3-4 fresh beers ready to pour. They’re one of the only growler fillers that let you pour the beer yourself and the pour is also nice and slow to ensure you don’t end up with half a bottle full of foam! Parking is easy, straight out the front and service is always with a friendly smile.
  3. 3

Leigh is a great trip from Auckland on a summer day. Make sure you stop in at the Sawmill Cafe to grab a casual pizza, chips and of course a beer sampler. Their entire range is really good but the Wheat Beer is crisp and unique and the Pilsner is Gold medal winning! Once you’ve picked your favourite beer, step outside to the small building next door and fill your Flagon/Growler (or purchase one onsite) at the brewery - its always fresh and tastey!
  4. 4
    3
Pop into the Fine Wine Delivery Company in Lunn Ave, Mount Wellington and fill up your Flagon/Growler at one of their many filling stations. Despite what the name may suggest, they have some extremely knowledgeable beer drinkers on hand to help guide you through a variety of different beer flavours and brands on tap. You can purchase a 1 or 2 litre Flagon/Growler right there and then to fill up and take home your favourite drop.
  5. 5
    8
Glengarry Wines in Victoria Park have the largest range of beer on tap that I have ever seen! The staff are always knowledgeable and more then happy to give out multiple samples to help you make a decision about which beer you’d like to have filled in your Flagon/Growler to take home. They tend to have a lot of the common Stoke range on tap, but make up for this with some other exotic brews you’ve never heard of (including some international ones!).
